Painting a Bedroom

Our middle daughter recently moved back home to finish her freshman year at college.  She wanted a more soothing color on her bedroom walls than the three shades of purple that were on them.  So plans were made to paint the room.

Friday, January 12, 2007:  Then room was emptied of most items.  The wall plates were all removed.

Saturday, January 13, 2007:  I made a quick analysis of what paint supplies we would need and off we went to Walmart.

My daughter picked "Gray Evening" for the color.  Specifically, it is the middle shade on paint chip 530:

We bought two 1-gallon cans of paint at $9.74 each:

Other supplies:

Because of the dark color of the existing paint, it was nearly impossible to find the nail holes to fill them.  I decided to wait unitl after the first coat of the new paint before doing that.

There was not much taping to be done.  The room has never been finished and the baseboards and door frames are not installed.

My wife did the trim and I rolled the walls.  That took about 3 hours.

Remarkably, one coat did an excellent job of covering the purple paint.

Sunday, January 14, 2007:  I patched the nail holes and we then applied a second coat of paint.  That took a little less than 3 hours.

Monday, January 15, 2007:  I removed the masking tape and reinstalled the wall plates.  The room is now ready to move back in.

One lesson learned is that you can not paint over the residue from duct tape.  There were a couple of places that had duct tape residue and the finished surface is discolored and cracked.
